April 2024 — Graham (Seat 6) How many Moddy Rotisserie drafts have you participated in? 2 Do you like or dislike the seat you were assigned? Why? 4th and 5th are the worst seats (completely reactive pretty much the entire time, can only take one card at a time, etc). 6th and 3rd are slightly better than those, but 3rd > 6th because 3rd gets to set the pace a bit more with its first pick whereas 6th is pretty reactive on the first round as well. So in summary, 6th is in the bottom half of seats, and among the bottom half, it’s 3rd worst imo. What’s your favorite card in Moddy? Greater Gargadon What’s your least favorite card in Moddy? Archon of Cruelty What is your strategy going into the draft? What’s your backup plan if your primary strategy is unavailable? My hope is that I might be able to set some pace if everyone before me goes heavy on artifacts (one ring, palantir, copter, etc) and I’m one of the first wizards to plant a stake in a specific color or color pair. I’ve been looking at primarily blue-core decks (aggro UW, aggro UG, artifacts matter UG, combo UR) because the color is very deep and can sustain lots of variations, and I’ve also been looking at red-core decks (aggro RG, aggro RB, combo RB). My first two rotos were W and WRB respectively, so I’m definitely trying to get away from W this time around. Ideally, I’d go for UG just for the variety to finish off the color pie, but it may be tough depending on how early people stake colors out. My first pick might be Oko to try and plant a pretty heavy color stake for myself, followed by some one-mana spells like Ponder, Preordain, Birds, or Noble Hierarch, since very low curve is so important in roto. That all being said, you know I love a good combo deck (see last roto, and see ridiculous [bad] combos I come up with regularly). I’m tempted to go for a RB Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Greater Gargadon, and Ob Nixilis combo where you resolve the Sheoldred and the Ob from hand and get Gargadon to sac for the Ob ETB to make an Ob copy that can immediately ult for 21 damage (7 damage + 7 cards for Sheoldred to proc 2 for each). Gargadon is pretty impossible to interact with, I found last roto. Only the other two parts are difficult to get into play at all. Assuming they don’t have instant speed removal, you could easily sac enough permanents to Garg to get it out once the other pieces are playable. The real question for me is whether I go for variety or whether I go for style. Either way sounds fun, so I’m definitely looking forward to the roto. If somehow both options go very quickly (maybe Otter gets Sheoldred, and then 2Blave takes too many of my good blue spells on the 7th and 10th picks of the Roto), then I’ll probably pivot to RG or RB aggro I think. It’ll depend on what I see, I guess What card(s) do you think you can get late for your strategies? If I go simic, Hullking Raptor and Karn, Scion of Urza. If I go rakdos, Ob Nix and Gargadon.
